The Lion Daalder, or Lion Dollar, was a Dutch coin struck to facilitate international trade. One of these places was Colonial America. The first paper money issued in New York (then "New Amsterdam") was payable in Lion Dollars. Additionally, the wreck of the HMS Feversham which sank in 1711 on its way to New York City contained a number of Lion Dollars, along with Spanish silver. There is also evidence that forgers produced them in Massachusetts in the early 1700's. Eventually, their popularity gave way to the Spanish 8 Reales, which was a finer silver quality and had a milled edge to prevent clipping. However, it still played a part in the commerce of early America, including giving us the name for our currency: the dollar.
